In writing to you I’m taking this risk, the chance of being interpreted as some sort of parasite. You likely came here to find funny, you came to find it on Friday, and here, fishing around on this public forum is some fink-rat who thinks he can find favor with an audience. All you know about me is that I’ve been a friend of Jon’s since high school, that I attend college in a medium-sized town about an hour north of KC, that my favorite song is “The Haunting” by Anberlin, and that one of my writing heroes is Jerry Holkins of Penny Arcade. Exactly how you’ve already divined these facts about me is a mystery hidden, but the internet is the ruler of this landscape, and Facebook is one of its most trusted advisors. I started at a disadvantage.
As it happens, I’m celebrating not one, but two birthdays today. The difference is that The Nerd’s Soup is only a day old, and I’ve just hit my 21st year. I’m looking forward to the hour Jon and I hit the streets later tonight, attempting to find the booze-fueled pulse of this metropolitan area.
Hmm… video game talk may or may not be in my charter, so I’d better spend a paragraph or two on that. I’m staring at a mess of game cases on my floor (titles that I thought I might play over break – titles brought always exceeds titles played), and the mesh of cover art looks like a loose median of the quality of the industry’s last few years. Currently on my plate are Ninja Gaiden II, Fable II, Condemned: Criminal Origins, and Prince of Persia. Ninja Gaiden II is like the vegetables you push around, pecking at a pea every now and again. This isn’t because the game isn’t fun, it just uses dastardly tactics in its boss fights. A lone ninja against two huge, fireball-spitting dragons is apparently bad odds; those poor dragons need some help. But see, now they’re just pushing me around for fun. Fable II is an early birthday present from Jon, too bad the game seems to think moving frames are beneath it. But we’ll work with it, maybe coax it with the promise of DLC. Condemned is dark… but spooky! Prince of Persia is quickly developing into the most promising mix of parkour and romantic comedy. I’m curious to see where that goes.
Ugh, ok, I’ll let you digest that for a while. I trust it’ll pass easily through and… yeah, nevermind. Have a great Friday, and you’ll see us next week!
